Abstract

It is difficult to measure the flow of a fluid whose temperature is very low. For example, the use of differential-pressure-type flow meters such as the orifice flow meter are troublesome because of the problems associated with differential pressure measurement. The use of the screw or turbine-type flow meter may be unsuitable because of unreliable cryogenic bearings. To avoid such problems the flow velocity of cryogenic supercritical helium was measured by applying a correlation technique. In this technique fluid is randomly heated by a heater which is located in the flow path of the fluid. A thermistor placed downstream from the heater detects the temperature rise of the fluid. By correlating the heat input with the temperature rise of the fluid, the flow velocity of the fluid can be determined.
