Abstract

1. The heating conditions of the soils in foundation beds of buildings and structures are affected, besides by the boundary conditions, by three basic factors: a) water content of the soil at the start of freezing; b) depth and density of the snow cover; c) design of the foundation and lower story of the building. 2. A limiting factor when designating the depth of building foundationsis the depth of soil freezing at the corners facing the prevailing winds, since soil freezing near the wall is less by a factor of 1.5–2. 3. Under Siberian conditions snow is a good insulating material for reducing the freezing depth and temperatures of freezing together of the soil and foundation.
