Abstract

Analysis of nuclear reactions induced with a 2.8 MeV 3He beam is used for the simultaneous determination of the amounts of 12C and 13C atoms in samples. Calibration samples made out of mixtures with a known 13C/12C isotope ratio are used to investigate the accuracy of the technique. Different energy dependences of the cross sections of the reactions used to detect 13C and 12C are found to result in a strong dependence on the target thickness in the experimental determination of 13C/12C isotope ratios. This poses additional requirements to the sample preparation.
