Abstract

Tetrahydrothiophene (THT) is one of the most commonly used gas odorants in Japan. To control the quality of the distribution gas, a simple method is required for the determination of THT. In our previous work, a gas detector tube able to determine THT in natural gas was developed. The principle of coloration is the oxidation of THT by KMnO4. In this study the authors determined THT in steam reforming gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Sulfur compounds (CS2COS, dimethylsulfide, diethyl-sul-fide) and methanol had no effect on the length of coloration. 1-C4H8 had no effect on the length of coloration at concentrations below 1000 volppm. THT in fuel gases free from olefins could be determined using the gas detector tube.
