Abstract

Surface properties of colloidal silica were investigated by the potentiometric acid—base titration method. The site-binding (s-b) model for the electrical double layer of hydrous oxides was applied to interpret the sorption of alkali cations from aqueous solutions. The intrinsic acidity constants of hydroxyl groups and intrinsic surface complexation constants for various ions on colloidal silica are presented. The values obtained indicate that the surface complexation or the specific sorption of alkali cations with SiO 2 is much weaker with respect to other oxides.
