Abstract

The surface deformations due to the pressure applied by a frictionless rigid cylindrical punch upon an elastic layer, of finite thickness, attached to a rigid substrate (bonded layer) are calculated numerically. The numerical results show excellent agreement with the analytic solution when the layer becomes a half-plane. The influence of the layer thickness and Poisson ratio on the obtained results is examined.
