Abstract
A chemically pure sample of tapiolite (FeTa2O6) was synthesized and used as a model standard for the major tantalum-bearing mineral, tantalite [(Fe,Mn)(Ta,Nb)2O6]. The The electrokinetic and surface-charge behaviour of FeTa2O6 in KNO3 electrolyte solutions were studied using the techniques of microelectrophoresis and potentiometric titrations, respectively. Tapiolite was found to have an isoelectric point (IEP) at pH 3.9 ± 0.2 and a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 3.8 ± 0.1. Hysteresis was observed between successive acid and base titrations above pH 6.5. Intrinsic-equilibrium constants were calculated by the Davis, James and Leckie double-extrapolation procedure, using a total surface-hydroxyl site density of 11.3 sites nm−2. The values obtained were pKinta 1 = 0.6 ± 0.1, pKinta 2 = 7.0 ± 0.1, pKintK+ = 5.9. The results are discussed with respect to Parks' model for mixed oxides, and with respect to their relevance to flotation of tantalite.
