Abstract

The photoelastic strain “freezing” method has been used to study the stress state of weld joints containing crack defects. Values of the stress intensity coefficients KI and kII were obtained as functions of the crack geometry and its location in the welded section of the joint on volumetric models of T-connections. Using regressive analysis, approximate formulas were obtained which could be used to determine KI and kII. These values could then be used to determine the quasielastic strength of weld joints under conditions of static and dynamic loading.
