Abstract

Since the acetylation method cannot be used for quantitative determination of small amounts of lower monohydric alcohols, these were oxidized to aldehydes and determined by colorimetric method. However, this method cannot be applied to samples containing large amounts of aldehyde or where the samples themselves are easily oxidizable. Fisher, et al. (1) described a method of utilization of the diazocoupling reaction. This method was investigated; an analytical apparatus was devised ; and the determination of methanol in formalin or acetone was carried out, as well as the quantitative determination of methanol in water-insoluble solvent by application of a dispersing agent and dioxane.
