Abstract

A rapid and sensitive method for the determination of Pt and Pd in geological samples is presented. A sample of 0.12.0 g, containing less than 5 mg of Cu and 300 mg of Fe, was decomposed with aqua regia and HF, and then the contents were evaporated to dryness. After repeating evaporation with aqua regia, the residue was dis-solved in 10 ml of 6 M HCl. Only the supernatant was shaken with 15 ml of MIBK to remove Fe. The aqueous layer was transferred into another separatory funnel, and 0.5 ml of KI (100 g/100 ml) was added. Pt and Pd were extracted into 0.21.0 ml of MIBK, and determined by graphite furnace AAS. The detection limit is 0.5 ppb for Pt and 0.2 ppb for Pd. The analyses of twenty samples can be done in about 8 h. This method was successfully applied to the determination of Pt and Pd in a variety of geological reference samples.
