Abstract
In order to illustrate to high school students the relation of science to society, a simplified optical experiment was used in a workshop to determine an approximate size of cigarette smoke particles. The significance of particulate matter suspended in the atmosphere was discussed. The details of the apparatus and the experiment are given in this paper.
