Abstract

A flow injection method based on the inhibition of the hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine to thiocholine catalyzed by acetylcholinesterase is proposed for the determination of the herbicide paraquat. The caliberated thiocholine is monitored spectrophotometrically using 5,5′-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid). The calibration graph based on peak area is linear in the range 0.2–1.5 μg/ml with a relative standard deviation of ±4.1% The method is applied to the determination of paraquat in a commercial product and in several water samples.
