Abstract

An improved gas-chromatographic method for determining ozone in the presence of other gases has been devised. The column can be used at ambient temperature with negligible decomposition of ozone during the determination. The apparatus is calibrated unequivocally by thermally decomposing ozone and measuring the resulting oxygen chromatographically. Mixtures of varying proportions of ozone and oxygen from the anode of a perchloric acid electrolysis cell were used for calibration, and in all instances the total amount of anode gas produced was as expected from the Faraday equivalent. Calibration using iodimetric determination of ozone was unsatisfactory; the iodimetric method appeared to overestimate ozone by about 30%.
