Abstract

Thermophilic anaerobic digestion studied using liquid manure filtrates. The dilutions of the whole manure were adjusted to yield feeds of the desired volatile solids (VS) concentrations. Three different concentrations of feed VS (3.4%, 4.2% and 5.2% VS) were digested at 55°C over a range of hydraulic retention times (HRT) from 1.1 to 15 days in order to determine the concentration/HRT combination which yields the highest rate of methane production. The 4.2% VS feed showed the universal maximum methane production of 1.12 l CH 4 l −1 day −1 at 3 days HRT as well as the highest general methane production efficiency. The other methane production local maxima occurred for the 3.4% VS feed (1.03 l CH 4 day −1) at 2 days HRT and for the 5.2% VS feed (0.94 l CH 4 l −1 day −1) at 4 days HRT.
