Abstract

We have determined the optical constants of poly(quinoxaline-5,8-diyl) and five of its 2,3-disubstituted derivatives using the pseudo-Brewster angle technique at six wavelengths (457.9, 488.0, 514.5, 632.8, 800.0 and 1064 nm). The refractive indices are fitted to Sellmeier's dispersion formula to estimate the wavelength dispersions of the refractive index in these polymers. The differences in the refractive indices of the six polymers were interpreted based on linear polarizability and free volume. The free volume of the repeating unit for each polymer estimated using Lorentz-Lorenz's relation is consistent with the size of the side chain. These polyquinoxalines with low refractive indices are promising for use as electroluminescent materials.
