Abstract

Little quantitative information is available regarding the ability of a thin film detector (TFD) to determine the nuclear charge of a low energy heavy mass ion. To compare the nuclear charge resolving power Z / ΔZ of the TFD to other heavy ion detectors, an experiment was performed where the TFD luminescence response to 252 Cf fission fragments was recorded in coincidence with the gamma de-excitation of the fragments. With this technique, the TFD nuclear charge resolving power Z / ΔZ was determined to be 25.2 for the light mass fragment group.
