Abstract

Abstract Complexation with cobaltothiocyanate followed by spectrophotometric measurement was compared with liquid chromatography (LC) for the determination of a nonionic nonylphenol ethoxylate surfactant in pulp and paper mill process samples. LC analysis was found to be superior to spectrophotometry because of the ease and rapidity of the method. The surfactant must be isolated from the sample matrixes by a gas stripping procedure. Recoveries were ≥ 85%. An unbleached Whitewater sample from a mill had a surfactant concentration of 0.31 mg/L.
