Abstract

1. The Kjeldahl method may be used to determine the total nitrogen content of nitrated petroleum products. 2. Data cited for the nitrogen content of various nitrated petroleum products indicate that the Kjeldahl method is sufficiently accurate to determine relative changes in the nitrogen content of nitration products in relation to the chemical composition of the raw material, nitration reaction conditions, and other factors. 3. It is shown that hydrocarbon nitration occurs when mineral oils or other high-boiling petroleum products interact with medium-concentration nitric acid.
