Abstract
The motion of rolls for forming a plate into a desired curvature distribution in three-roll bending is determined by controlled FEM simulation. In the controlled FEM simulation, the movement of the rolls is adjusted by a feedback control to approach the desired curvature distribution. This movement is iteratively modified on the basis of fuzzy reasoning by using the calculated curvature distribution during bending in each deformation step. For a product with a large curvature, a multi-pass three-roll bending process is employed and the number of passes is calculated from the critical stroke of the roll without slipping between the plate and the rolls. The effectiveness of the present method is demonstrated from a bending experiment of steel plates for the motion of the rolls determined by the controlled FEM simulation.
