Abstract

Desorption chemical ionization mass spectrometry (DCI-MS) has been investigated as a technique for polymer analysis. Under appropriate experimental conditions, protonated molecular ions of oligomeric species are produced, without fragmentation. Thus, it is possible to obtain a distribution of molecular weights for various polymers (polystyrenes, poly-(ethylene glycols), polysiloxanes, and polynorbornene) by recording their positive ion DCI mass spectra
