Abstract

A rapid and extremely sensitive method for the determination of mercury concentrations as low as 20 ng 1 −l in water is described. The samples are digested with a mixture of potassium permanganate and sulphuric acid, in order to decompose organic compounds containing or adsorbing mercury and to avoid adsorption on the walls of the container as well as losses by volatilization. The recommended concentration of permanganate is shown to decompose methylmercury compounds completely. After digestion the analysis is carried out by the cold-vapour atomic absorption technique.
