Abstract

The recent revelation of melamine contamination in food stuffs has rocked the international public health community, so a rapid and sensitive method to detect the presence of melamine in dairy products was essential. Therefore, we proposed the use of chromatographic data produced by HPLC in particular for melamine detection in complex dairy matrixes. A HPLC method for determination of melamine was reported, with acetonitrile 10% in water and formic acid 0.25% as mobile phase and UV detection at 240nm. The tested parameters include mobile phase composition, % of organic solvent, buffer concentration, pH value and UV detection λ. Good linearity was observed within the concentration range of 8–12μg/ml. The method was successfully applied to determine melamine in several dairy products, with acetonitrile as extract solvent of melamine and also as protein precipitant.
