Abstract
A simple micro solvent extraction method for manganese in seawater with subsequent determination by graphite furnace AAS is described. The method is based on the extraction with 100 μl of solvent in a centrifuge tube, followed by centrifugation of the mixture and transfer the organic phase into a glass tube fitted in a Teflon tube by a glass syringe. Manganese in seawater is extracted into 1-chlorotoluene as the manganese-diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) complex. Maximum extraction of the manganese-DDTC complex from artificial seawater into 1-chlorotoluene is obtained at pH 68 with a DDTC concentration range above 200 mg l-1. A preconcentration factor of 200 times is obtainable. The analytical results indicate that the concentrations of manganese in Isozaki beach, Hitachi harbor and Pacific Ocean sea water are found to be 3.6, 11.4 and 0.48.μg 1-1, respectively. The proposed method has advantages of saving valuable samples and reagents, and the possibility of concentrating trace elements in small volume of sample solution.
