Abstract

We present a direct (online) multi-target breath analysis method for determining the concentration of gases at the ppm level or lower. We focus on determining the concentrations of acetone and carbon monoxide (CO), which are important indices used in the monitoring of health. The purpose of the present report is to investigate the feasibility of using commercially available sensors for such clinical and daily use. A preliminary discrimination between acetone and interfering ethanol is investigated using artificial breath. We evaluate the effectiveness of the sensors and the method for determining low concentrations of gases, and their applicability to the second target gas, CO.
