Abstract

Determination of knowledge and attitudes of pediatric nurses working in a training hospital about parenteral nutrition SUMMARY The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge and attitudes of pediatric nurses who work in a training hospital about total parenteral nutrition. The study was carried out at the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Department of Pediatrics between May 05 and June 01, 2012. The population of the study was consisted of 33 volunteered pediatric nurses and all nurses were reached. A questionnaire developed by the researchers were used for data collection. Questionnaires were filled in approximately 10-15 minutes by face to face manner. The sample was consisted of Pediatric surgery nurses (%30.3) and Pediatric nurses (%69.7). The scores of nurses\' knowledge were minimum 48.75, maximum 81.25 and median 61.75. Nurses knowledge scores were 25-50 (6.1%), 50.1-60 (24.3%), 60.1-70 (60.6%) and 70.1-80 (6%). The percent of nurses that scored over 80.1 was %3. When the education level was compared, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference between graduate and undergraduate pediatric nurses’ score. It is recommended to plan in-service training for pediatric nurses in order to ensure the desired level of knowledge and skills and parenteral nutrition practices in a safe manner.
