Abstract

A study has been made of the positive ion species emerging from the cathode of a corona discharge between concentric hemispheres. Hydrogen gas filling was used and a quadrupole mass spectrometer incorporated for determination of the relative concentration of the various species. H+, H3+ and H5+ ions were observed, and their concentration is given both as a function of the space-charge-corrected reduced electric field at the cathode and the gas filling pressure.
