Abstract

Abstract The present study aimed to determine genetic variability and population structure of native Turkish goats including Hair, Kabakulak, Honamli and Norduz. A total of 255 different alleles and 16 private alleles were detected across 20 microsatellite loci. Number of alleles ranged from 8.30 (Norduz) to 11.70 (Hair), whereas number of effective alleles varied from 5.20 (Norduz) to 7.21 (Hair). Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.69 (Honamli) to 0.75 (Hair), while expected heterozygosity varied from 0.80 (Norduz) to 0.85 (Hair). FIS values ranged from 0.09 (HAI) to 0.16 (HNM). Unlike previous studies, phylogenetic analysis revealed that Norduz breed was turned out to be genetically different from the other breeds for the first time. Additionally, the present study was the first attempt revealing that Kabakulak goats which are accepted as Hair variety until today, were genetically closer to Honamli than Hair goat breed.
