Abstract

An exact solution of the Kármán-Schoenherr equation is presented using a similar derivation of the PKN equation solution. The Lambert W function, a special function, is used in the derivation. A proportional relationship of the skinfriction resistance coefficient of a flat plate in the turbulent flow is obtained by means of the exact solution. An expression which expresses a proportion of the viscous resistance coefficient is also found. Thus, the total resistance coefficient can be approximated by a simple power function. We perform curve fitting to some results of the ship resistance tests using the power function. Consequently, it can be found that the present approach for determination of the form factor is quite useful.
