Abstract

The analysis of fermenting acids in silage using capillary zone electrophoresis is described. Different separation media including aqueous as well as non-aqueous carrier electrolytes have been tested in combination with direct and indirect UV detection of the analytes. Silage samples obtained from different raw materials and produced by various methods of fermentation have been investigated. UV-transparent carrier electrolytes suitable for direct UV detection with a pH value close to the p K a of the investigated fermenting acids proved to be most effective for the analysis of silage samples.
