Abstract
To investigate coprostanol as an fecal indicator in well and surface water, the study was conducted with the samples from the livestock raising area of Yongin, Icheon and Gongju Gun in Korea. The extracted water samples were determined by GC‐MS. Coprostanol content in well water samples ranged from less than one to 20 ng/1. The results indicate the level of coprostanol in well water depends on the number and species of livestock, soil texture and well depth. Coprostanol found in surface water was higher comparing with recreational water level (< 500ng/l), on the other hand, the ratio (the coprostanol concentration in well water sample/surface water sample) was very low (0.005 to 0.01).
