Abstract

Partial ionization cross sections are measured for the formation of parent and fragment ions from SO2 and SO3. For SO2, the SO+2, SO+, and S+ and/or O+2 ions are observed for ionizing electron energies between the ionization potential and 40 eV at temperatures in the interval 295–865 K. For SO3, SO+3, SO+2, SO+, and S+ and/or O+2 the ions are observed between the ionization potential and 30 eV over the temperature range 496–870 K. Total ionization cross-section curves are formulated for both species by appropriate summing of the partial cross sections. Appearance potentials for formation of various ions are identified and discussed in terms of elementary processes which may be responsible. The fragmentation patterns of both SO2 and SO3 are found to be insensitive to temperature over the range studied.
