Abstract

Highly ionic organic compounds, polyelectrolytes, as well as more recently introduced block copolymers (diblock or triblock), composed of nonionic and ionic hydrophilic blocks (DHBC), are known to be used in crystallization of inorganic compounds. These ionic products become insoluble in water after being attached to the water-insoluble inorganic salts, e.g., CaCO3, forming together the polymer-inorganic hybrids. The field of thus mediated crystallization bears resemblance to the natural processes of biomineralization.
