Abstract
We investigated the saturation dynamics of the 192OsO 4-absorption line P(46)A 1 2 in the infrared ν 3-band, induced by excitation with CO 2-laser light, and determined the decay constant T 1 of the saturation as a function of the OsO 4 gas pressure. From the linear dependence of the relaxation rate T 1 −1 on the pressure we additionally determined the collision cross section σ = 6.6 × 10 −18m 2 which is substantial for the evaluation of the pressure broadening of saturation dips in the saturation spectroscopy of OsO. The method allows to measure the influence of collisions on homogeneous line widths, measured in saturation exeriments.
