Abstract

Various approaches to assessment of the relative proneness of soil to Slump-type settlement is examined. In deformation calculations, it is proposed to use the structural strength of the wetted soil in lieu of the pressure initiating slump-type settlement. It is emphasized that the relative proneness of soil to slump-type settlement should be determined under conditions whereby it is wetted with water or solutions corresponding in terms of temperature and chemical composition to the liquid circulating in utilities laid for the entity.
