Abstract

An analytical method is described for a more accurate determination of cellulose in lignocellulosic waste streams contaminated with synthetic materials. Lignin, hemicellulose, polyurethane, and nylon are extracted with the acetic acid/nitric acid reagent. Cellulose is extracted with 72% H2SO4 while virtually all other synthetics found in appreciable quantities in MSW remain unextracted. This cellulose determination compares favorably with other accepted methods when synthetics are absent and is more accurate when synthetics are present.
