Abstract

Alkaline earth carbonates are important constituents of many sodic soils The presence of soluble carbonates and bicarbonates in sodic soils interferes in their accurate determination. In the present study calcium carbonate equivalent was determined in several sodic soils without any prior treatment and after leaching out soluble salts with 95% ethanol. The difference in the values obtained from the treated and untreated soils was equal to the amount of soluble carbonates and bicarbonates in the soils. Prior leaching of soluble salts or a correction factor for the same is, therefore, essential for accurate determination of calcium carbonate equivalent content in sodic soils containing soluble carbonates and bicarbonates.
