Abstract

A tentative amplitude distance calibrating function for PKP waves is obtained for the determination of short-period body-wave magnitudes of shallow earthquakes in the New Zealand and Macquarie Loop regions where magnitude estimates are less frequent than in other regions of the globe. The recalculation of magnitudes based on both P and PKP data improves the magnitude determination for the two regions significantly and it is recommended that PKP data collected in the Bulletin of the ISC be used for the magnitude determination in order to monitor the seismic events of the whole globe homogeneously.
