Abstract

A procedure for analyzing mixtures of glycosaminoglycans using the Technicon sugar chromatography system is described. Mixtures of standard samples of hyaluronic acid, heparan sulfate, chondroitin sulfates, and heparin were analyzed. The method has been applied to quantitate individual glycosaminoglycans in mixtures isolated from aortas of human, monkey, and dog. Mixtures of chondroitin 4- and 6-sulfates and dermatan sulfate eluted from the column as single peaks and were analyzed by using chondroitinases in the fractions collected using a stream splitter in the system. The results are in good agreement with those obtained previously by other procedures.
