Abstract

Imbalance of cellular redox homeostasis, accompanied by accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress, can lead to serious damage of macromolecules, oxidative mediated cell-death, or organ injury. In piglets, disproportionate levels of oxidative stress negatively influence mucosal barrier integrity, formation of tight junctions, and overall absorptive function of the intestine, which all results in a poor animal health state and growth suppression [1, 2]. The discovery of natural feed additives having the potential to combat oxidative stress and its consequences for piglets therefore is of special interest.
