Abstract

The enthalpies of polymerization of indene and cyclopentadiene have been determined, using adiabatic calorimetry at low temperatures. Polymerizations were performed in methylene chloride solution, and were initiated using Friedel-Crafts catalysts. The enthalpy of polymerization of cyclopentadiene, determined at −70°, is −14·1 kcal/mole ( †H ss ). In the case of indene, the same value ( †H ss =−13·9 kcal/ mole ) was obtained at + 10°, −30° and −70°.
