Abstract

During the past years Community Antenna Television (CATV) networks have emerged as a candidate for the provision of highspeed interactive digital services. This was due to the increased demand of high speed Internet connections, the unused capacity of cable networks and the inability of the telephone companies to respond in a timely and cost effective manner. Since CATV networks use differing technologies and there were no industry standards, cable companies and their industry associations have been working over the last years and standards are now being established. The official North American CATV standard is the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS, ITU-T J.112). The DOCSIS requires that a DOCSIS-compliant cable modem download a DOCSIS configuration file during its power-on or reset sequence. A Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server is used for this purpose. This paper focuses on DOCSIS implementation in Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC).
