Abstract

Welded joints always exhibit more or less severe gradients in mechanical properties. Furtheron residual stresses of unknown size and distribution are present. These factors complicate the assessment of the fracture behaviour of welded joints. In general residual stresses become dangerous if they lead to local multiaxiality of tension stresses, which favours brittle fracture. Therefore, a submerged are welded joint of a HSLA—steel with plate thickness of 35 mm was examined in detail. The technique applied was the strain gauge cutting method. The evaluation of residual stresses was performed for surface stresses and also for stresses across the thickness. The welded joint investigated was given the possibility of free shrinkage.
