Abstract

Book was written as an response to the emerging need to conduct research on the identification of factors affecting the competitiveness and development of intermodal transport, resulting from the adopted direction of the EU transport policy aimed at mitigating the negative effects of transport by supporting more environmentally neutral modes of transport. These kinds of studies are rarely undertaken in the existing literature. In addition, the importance of individual determinants of the competitiveness of intermodal transport is not a constant issue and changes depending on many factors, which leads to the need to conduct up-to-date research considering contemporary conditions. The results of the empirical research were confronted with the results of theoretical research, which resulted in an objective assessment of the determinants of the competitiveness of intermodal transport and an assessment of their significance. In-depth analysis of the obtained results of theoretical and empirical research in the field of competitiveness factors of intermodal transport, with particular emphasis on economic factors, was presented. Subsequently, a theoretical model was developed to assess the competitiveness of intermodal transport connections in Europe. At the end recommendations to improve the competitiveness of intermodal transport in Europe, addressed to both TSL industry practitioners and authorities creating transport policy, was developed.
