Abstract

Renders and plasters are usually employed for restoration, consolidation and decorative purposes. This paper looks at a rapid method based on conductivity measurements to evaluate the damage caused by sulphuric acid on cement renders. Exposure of the renders to 0.1% w/w sulphuric acid solutions resulted, as expected, in the formation of gypsum and no signs of ettringite were observed. The samples were also treated with siloxane coatings (polydimethylsiloxane) to investigate the waterproofing role on acid protection. A linear correlation was found between the time of immersion and change in conductivity. Finally, the results were supported by water absorption tests, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and ion chromatography.
