Abstract

Detergents are various surface-active agents particularly effective in dislodging foreign matter from soiled surfaces and retaining it in suspension. Detergents contribute to good personal hygiene and to extend the useful life of clothes, tableware, linens, surfaces, and furnishings. Route of exposure and toxicity significantly vary depending on the chemical, the duration and the frequency of product use. The most affected tissues are those directly exposed to external environments, as detergents mainly act by surface contact. Hence, most of the reported side effects have been linked to dermatological, respiratory, and ocular exposure. Ingestion is the most common route of accidental exposure.
