Abstract

An experimental program is designed to monitor tool flank wear using low frequency noise spectra resulting from the rubbing action of the tool and workpiece. In general, the emitted noise level in the frequency range 2.75–3.75 kHz increased with an increase in tool flank wear and the results were interpreted in terms of an increase in friction at the tool-workpiece interface as the tool flank wear increased. The effect of cutting speed and tool overhang on the level of noise emitted during the turning operation was also investigated. It was found that the tool overhang was the most significant parameter in the level of noise emitted.
