Christopher ; Hine, Butler P. Abstract The optical counterpart of the 555-s X-ray periodicity from V471 Tau has been detected based on high-speed photometry acquired using the 0.76 and 0.92 m McDonald Observatory telescopes. The fractional semiamplitude of the periodicity in the Johnson U band is found to vary from 9.7 x 10 to the -4th to less than 3.8 x 10 to the -4th. It is suggested that the observed periodicity could be caused either by rotation of the white dwarf, if it is magnetized and accretes material from the K2 V star, or by g-mode pulsations of the white dwarf.
