Abstract

1. 1. A diffraction technique was developed to detect the expansion at a grain boundary, based on the model of a boundary as a uniform thin crystal. 2. 2. Specimens containing an [001] twist boundary in the edge-on orientation in Au suitable for study by electron diffraction, were produced by epitaxial growth on a NaCl substrate containing an edge-on [001] twist boundary. 3. 3. Under the assumption of the uniform thin crystal model of a grain boundary, the average expansion at the 0=22° [001] twist boundary in gold was determined to be 5% ± 3%.
