Abstract

The concept of structural inconsistency in systems of equations is generalized to systems in which the number of equations is not necessarily equal to that of unknowns, and efficient algorithms for detecting it are established. Some examples are presented to show that the present method is not only useful for detecting errors in the formulation of large-scale systems but also useful for analyzing some essential properties of various kinds of engineering systems.
