Abstract

Detection of boron K α X-rays by a windowless Si(Li) detector has been demonstrated. The B K α X-rays were generated by bombarding a polished boron target with 350 keV protons. Determination of the detection efficiencies for proton-induced C K α and O K α X-ray permitted evaluation of the effective gold-layer and dead-layer thicknesses for the detector. These layer thickness and tabulated mass absorption coefficients were employed to calculate the energy dependence of the detector efficiency. Finally, a linear relationship between X-ray energy E and detected pulse-height was found for 183 eV≤ E≤1486 eV.
